South Korea

What’s Next?

May 29, 2017

As soon as I made the decision to leave Korea, I was then faced with the next big and seemingly impossible question.

Now what…?

Do I go home? Do I keep traveling? Do I find another country to live and work in?

It was a lot to process, especially because I wasn’t ready to settle in back home. So I began brainstorming and researching my options. And believe me, there were plenty of options and back-and-forth thoughts. But instead of getting into all of that headache inducing nonsense, I’ll just get right to it.

When my contract ends in late August, I’ll be (drumroll please)….traveling THAILAND! My friend and I will be exploring the magnificent country for three whole weeks. The three main areas we’re going to are Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Bangkok. We’ll also be venturing outside of those cities to explore some of the islands and hopefully a national park. We still have a little more planning to go, but we already have some pretty neat things planned!

In Chiang Mai we’re going to a highly respected elephant sanctuary where the animals are treated phenomenally. They don’t permit anyone to ride the elephants, which is a very good sign and indicates the sanctuary is legit. Contrary to popular belief, elephants, unlike horses, have sensitive spines and aren’t designed to carry excess weight. Riding elephants and putting any excess weight on their backs actually causes them long-term harm. It’s truly saddening because many people lack this awareness and unknowingly visit and contribute to the elephant tourism industry. So if you see a “sanctuary” that advertises elephant rides or picture-worthy opportunities to hop on their backs and swim with them, then run in the opposite direction…they are not treating their elephants well. Look for the places that are legitimate sanctuaries and safe havens for these amazing creatures. If you’d like to know more, you can read about it here, here, and here.

In addition to the sanctuary, we’re also doing a Thai cooking class! Definitely looking forward to learning how to make yummy Thai food. To follow these things and other adventures we’re going on in real time, then keep an eye on my insta (hippieseoul) and I’ll do my best to update there.

After Thailand, I’M HOMEWARD BOUND for my sister’s wedding! I won’t be home for good quite yet, but a little less than two weeks will be much needed after a year abroad and will give me plenty of time to reconnect with family and friends (and obviously my cats).

Ready for my next step?

Believe it or not, my next step is…India! For all of October, November, and a little into December, I’ll be in Dharamshala for a Reiki Master teacher training program followed by Rishikesh for a 200 hr yoga TTC. I couldn’t be more excited about these programs and this path I’ve chosen. I can’t imagine my time in India being anything less than remarkable and I am immensely grateful for this opportunity to go.

Following India, it’s a toss up between visiting some other countries or returning home to figure out my next steps from there. I’m leaning more towards going home, but I guess we’ll have to see where the spirit moves me.

6/14/17 Update: When looking at flights from India to home, I realized how pricey the tickets are. So I did some research and figured out that I can travel through 2 countries before heading home for $200 cheaper than flying directly home from India. It was such a good deal that I couldn’t pass it up…so I booked the tickets! My first stop is Stockholm, Sweden for 4 days followed by Amsterdam, Netherlands for 5 days. All of this will get me home right in time for the holidays! I can’t wait!!

8/19/17 Update: Because I’m going to be in India for slightly longer than 60 days, I was in a position of having to apply for the more complicated tourist visa as opposed to the online e-visa. I’m only going to be home for 13 days in September, so I ultimately made the decision to not risk trying to get the visa in a short period of time and instead, visit another country in between programs enabling me to apply for 2 e-visas which would be much easier. After the Reiki Master program, I’ll be traveling to Singapore for a week!! I’m very excited about this. Then after that week, I’ll head back to India for the yoga TTC.

Until next time {xo},

We loved our trip to Thailand! When in Chang Mai, be sure to do a trip to the hill country’s weekly market. This is near the junction of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar (Burma). All kinds of groups and tribes make local crafts and products which they sell. We got absolutely beautiful handwork there – small purses, pillow cases, jewelry, and other things – which we brought home for ourselves and as gifts. I know there has been fighting in some areas – hope the market is still thriving!

Thank you for this suggestion!! It sounds lovely 🙂 I’ll do some research on it and see if it’s a safe and viable option for us!

Chang Mai also has a great night market. I will send you the name of the small place Ii stayed in Bangkok when I was working there. Siam II I believe. It is a small travelers hotel with open air lobby and a tiny pool. Basic room with air in each one though.

The night market sounds great! That sounds lovely, but we actually have our place in Bangkok booked already. If you know a place in Phuket though, that’d be great! We’re looking into accommodations there now

Here is my post on Rishikesh –

If your itinerary allows, do visit Landour too, a small hill station near Rishikesh. –

I have already spammed you with a lot of information but still let me know if you have any questions 🙂
